Power Plant Operator

Job Responsibilities

• Regularly makes decisions on non-routine or escalated technical issues.
• Independently prioritizes and executes responsibilities effectively for a single trade, group of related tasks or functional area.
• Checks own work and possibly the work of others; work results are of the highest quality standards and advanced technical competency.
• Resolves the most complex technical issues, conferring with Team Leader occasionally; may serve as resource to others in resolution of complex issues.
• Works under limited supervision.
• Prioritizes own weekly schedule and may guide others in the completion of tasks within clearly defined schedules as set by management.
• Regularly provides on-the-job skills training to others in complex technical areas.
• Supports and participates in safety committee program.
• Supports and utilizes Standing Orders procedures.
• Understands, supports and follows the safety guidelines and procedures.
• Maintain work areas, housekeeping assignments and required tool inventories.
• Understands, supports and follows local plant policies and memorandums.
• Maintain positive professional attitude, professional behavior and establish and maintain productive work relationships with all co-workers at all time.
• Maintain accurate and timely records of plant operation, operator log sheets, safety check sheets, and other reporting as necessary.
• Train other employees in efficient and safe operation of facility to achieve the best heat rate.
• Communicate to facility management as necessary.
• Maintains current technical level and re-qualifications as deemed by management.
• Work rotating twelve hours shifts, including weekends and holidays, and is subject to callout and overtime.
• Must be multi-task oriented with ability to make expeditious appropriate decisions to non-routine plant operating situations.
• Provides coverage and shares on call duty for other operating technicians.
• Understand and follows the NERC guidelines required for power generation.
• Assist in updating and writing procedures.
• Follows directives from all management team members.
• Promotes and works with others in a self-directed team environment.
• Support, communicate and recognize Lead Operator roles and responsibilities.
• Works with the leadership and improvement team at the facility.

Required Skills / Knowledge

• Competent oral and written communication skills.
• Experience with machinery repair and PLC/DCS control systems.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity and mathematics.
• Previous experience using electrical test equipment and instrument calibration appliances preferred.
• Advanced electronics and instrumentation certifications/licensures a plus.

Experience

• Directly related experience including understanding of health and safety regulations, and previous experience working with and around hazardous energy, chemicals and waste materials including knowledge of safe handling, storage, and transport.
• Performs a variety of complex technical service/support duties requiring specialized knowledge.

Education Requirements

• High School Diploma. Degree from technical/vocational school, military service or equivalent preferred. Training/degree in industrial instrumentation and controls a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to do walking, reaching, climbing, and stooping and lifting (up to 50 pounds). Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
