This Chemical Engineer position supports power generation at a co-generation facility in Baton Rouge, LA. The candidate will have engineering responsibility for water/steam management systems, including chemistry, filtration, and treatment. The candidate will review and assess process conditions and work with Plant Operations to optimize efficiency and reliability of the water/steam cycle at the facility. The candidate will also support Plant Maintenance in developing preventive and proactive maintenance plans for process equipment, as well as troubleshooting equipment challenges when they arise. The candidate will be responsible for developing and executing improvement projects as part of a strategic, long-term project plan for the water/steam management systems at the facility.

Job Responsibilities

  • Review water cycle process conditions – especially chemistry-related parameters – and ensure operating conditions are achieved to optimize process reliability and efficiency
  • Facilitate preventive and proactive maintenance activities on process equipment to ensure reliable operations
  • Facilitate inspections and assessments of piping, vessels, heat exchangers, and other assets to ensure mechanical and chemical integrity
  • Manage long-term strategic project plan for water/steam systems at the facility
  • Perform Project Management responsibilities including but not limited to:
  • Developing project scopes and objectives,
  • Developing project justifications,
  • Creating budgets and spend forecasts,
  • Tracking costs,
  • Managing relationships with 3rd parties, including purchasing/procurement processes, work execution, and site activities
  • Regularly review and update piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Utilize and be proficient with Microsoft Office software applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Utilize and be proficient with PI ProcessBook and other data management and analysis systems
  • Utilize and be proficient with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Work closely with personnel from different departments on cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, identify improvement opportunities, and realize solutions – must be a good communicator and thrive in a team environment
  • Flexibility to provide 24/7 support to Plant Operations and Maintenance during emergent situations

Required Skills / Knowledge

  • Background in water chemical treatment and filtration technology
  • Background in general chemistry
  • Background in boiler cycle chemistry
  • Ability to perform mass/energy balance equations
  • Basic understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer
  • Basic understanding of fluid mechanics
  • Basic understanding of materials
  • Must have good computer skills and proficiency in prominent software applications (MS Office, OSI Soft/PI data trending/analysis applications, etc.)

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with water treatment applications
  • Previous experience with water filtration, ideally involving Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology
  • Previous experience with cycle chemistry management for industrial feedwater, boiler, and/or Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) systems
  • Technical understanding of basic chemical, mechanical, and thermal systems

Education Requirements

  • Minimum education of Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, or equivalent technical field, from an accredited institution; significant professional experience will be considered as a substitute

Physical Requirements

  • Perform field/plant support with physical requirements of climbing ladders, accessing equipment at elevation, entering confined spaces, maneuvering through/over/around plant equipment and piping systems, and aiding in good housekeeping practices #LI-HB1
