Project Overview
Since 2021, EthosEnergy has supported a major offshore installation in the North Sea, delivering critical maintenance and performance services that support a leading oil and gas operator’s single-train strategy and long-term emissions reduction goals.
Building on a strong track record with the operator in the UK North Sea, including the successful management of a previous platform’s remaining fleet through to decommissioning, EthosEnergy secured a new long-term contract to manage three Siemens SGT-200 packages.
Following a successful pre-emptive A-type service that demonstrated technical expertise and responsiveness, EthosEnergy transitioned from ad-hoc support to a fully embedded partnership through a multi-million dollar long-term service agreement (LTSA).
The LTSA covers three SGT-200 gas turbines and includes scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, engineering support and 24/7 technical assistance.
The Challenge
Before partnering with EthosEnergy, the operator faced several technical and strategic challenges. The platform’s aging gas turbines were experiencing performance issues, and newly introduced emissions reduction targets demanded improvements in operational efficiency. Seeking an alternative to the OEM, the customer turned to EthosEnergy to provide the flexibility and diverse expertise required to support its evolving goals.
Their operational strategy depended on maintaining high availability from a single train as part of a one-out-of-three gas turbine configuration. This made reliability absolutely critical to sustaining platform performance. However, legacy issues, obsolescence of parts and systems, and the end-of-life outlook for the asset (within 5–10 years) added complexity to the challenge.
The EthosEnergy Solution
The operator’s requirements meant they needed a partner who could deliver more than just maintenance. EthosEnergy responded with a customized LTSA, blending technical expertise with proactive, flexible support.
At the heart of this collaboration, EthosEnergy embedded a dedicated Project Manager within the operator’s team, providing a consistent point of contact and ensuring seamless communication through daily and weekly meetings, live action tracking, and real-time updates via their internal communication platform.
EthosEnergy consistently goes above and beyond contractual expectations to support operations, including extending Field Service Engineer mobilisations, assisting with additional assets, and responding rapidly to ensure seamless service delivery. This proactive, hands-on approach has enabled the operator to navigate a range of complex challenges with confidence.
For example, during a 2024 turnaround, the operator drew on the legacy expertise of EthosEnergy personnel to ensure smooth coordination and when another vendor was unable to support requirements, EthosEnergy swiftly mobilized compressor specialists, keeping the project on track and earning recognition for the team’s agility and technical expertise.
EthosEnergy delivered a tailored five-day training course to 20 of the operator’s personnel at its Dyce facility, aimed at boosting their in-house capability and reducing downtime through improved remote support. The course was well received and has since been offered to other customers, highlighting a commitment to collaboration beyond the traditional client/vendor relationship.
Collaborative transparency remains central to the relationship, with the operator having full access to EthosEnergy’s workshops for inspections and engineering discussions. Integration with their procurement systems has further streamlined commercial processes, enhanced responsiveness, and significantly reduced lead times.
Key Results
EthosEnergy’s partnership with this major oil and gas operator has delivered strong results across performance, efficiency, and operational continuity. In terms of availability, the platform consistently exceeded targets, achieving 99.38% in 2022 (vs. 90%) and 96.72% in 2023 (vs. 94%), with quarterly KPI sign-offs of 99% in Q1 2023 and 98.75% in Q1 2024.
Efficiency improvements were driven by cost-effective engine overhauls and significantly reduced downtime, enabled by EthosEnergy’s remote troubleshooting capabilities and flexible mobilisations. EthosEnergy has played a key role in supporting the operator’s one-out-of-three gas turbine strategy, helping to overcome legacy platform constraints and address the challenges posed by parts and systems obsolescence.
